Mukuni Village Tour - Home of the Toka Leya People
Mukuni Village: a Cultural and Historical experience
Duration: 2-3 hours
Rates: Adult US$ 50 - Children under 12 half price
The Toka Leya people are the indigenous inhabitants of the region surrounding Mosi-oa-Tunya in Zambia and Zimbabwe. They consist of two closely related groups, the Toka (Batoka) and the Leya (Baleya), who speak dialects of the Tonga language as well as Lozi (in Zambia).
One notable Toka Leya settlement is Mukuni Village, situated approximately 5 km downstream from Mosi-oa-Tunya Falls.
With a deep-rooted history in the area, the Toka Leya regard Mosi-oa-Tunya as both sacred and central to their cultural identity. The waterfall has been an integral part of their way of life for centuries, and they have resided in the region for hundreds of years. The Batoka people lend their name to the gorges located downstream from Mosi-oa-Tunya Falls.
